**Jason’s Epic Food Tour – Stop 2 of 6**
Preface: I suppose I should first explain what Jason’s Epic Food Tour is all about. Knowing that we love to eat and the types of food we wanted to try, Jason came up with a list of 6 eateries to visit based on his own experiences. The first stop of the tour was a second visit to Where Ya At, and we now continue on to our next destination.
Who would’ve ever predicted that Mark’s favourite meal in Seattle would come out of this unassuming red shack? Well, this isn’t just any red shack. This is where Paseo Caribbean Restaurant cranks out amazing Caribbean eats.
Jason recalled fond memories of eating at this Paseo location (Fremont) when he used to live in the area. We were rather surprised at the massive line-up, but apparently this is business as usual – the line never quits. Well then, this place must have some epic eats because who else would wait for upwards of an hour in line?
While we waited, Jason recommended the Grilled Pork Sandwich (cubed pork loin grilled over lava rocks & basted w/ Paseo Marinade until golden brown), his favourite. We also decided the Caribbean Roast (pork shoulder coated in Paseo Marinade & slow roasted ’til falling into succulent morsels – this is the actual menu description… seriously, how can you go wrong with succulent morsels?). Our plan was to share the two sandwiches amongst the four of us.
As we got closer to the entrance, we nabbed an empty table in the back. The interior space itself is very small, with room for only a few tables. It looks like more of a take-out place rather than a sit-and-eat establishment. Not that it mattered, though – the whole place was working like a well-oiled machine. Pretty much everyone knew the drill – place your order at the till and wait for your number to be called.
Behold the Grilled Pork Sandwich! It came on a beautifully crusty baguette with the most amazing soft, chewy texture. Clearly this is a sandwich meant to be kept wrapped up and eaten whole because after we split it in half, it was hard to keep everything together. It was a mega gigantic HOT MESS eating this sandwich, but it was worth it. It was stuffed to the brim with perfectly seasoned pork and caramelised onions, balanced nicely with the creamy aioli and sourness of the pickled jalapenos.
Sadly, I didn’t get a shot of the Caribbean Roast sandwich, but it essentially looks the same as the Grilled Pork. I preferred the Caribbean Roast with the slow roasted pork shoulder. It reminded me of a pulled pork sandwich, but seasoned with Caribbean spices and flavours (which, I can’t even really describe or compare it to anything because this is the first time I’ve ever had a sandwich of this kind or calibre). The meat was so incredibly moist and tender that it literally melted in my mouth. This, people, is what Pork Heaven is all about.
I can only comment on these two sandwiches I had at Paseo, but judging from the line-up and the willingness for people to wait so long for their food, clearly they’re doing something well. Paseo is getting a lifetime spot on our list of must-go places in Seattle and I would heartily recommend it to anyone who wants to have a hot mess sandwich experience.
