I got together with a couple of friends over the past weekend to catch up on life and other things.  It was a reminder, once again, that time goes by so much faster these days; the older I get, the quicker the clock seems to tick.  It always feels like ages since I last see friends, like the gap in between our meetings grows larger and more frequent as our lives continue to march forward, often to the beat of a faster drum.

To slow things down somewhat and take in the last days of summer, we headed over to Gravity Espresso & Wine Bar in the quaint neighbourhood of Inglewood.  I tell myself that I should visit Inglewood more often, since it’s in close proximity to where I live and there’s a lot of great local businesses.  I’m still working on that.

Gravity is a fairly recent addition to the Calgary café scene, but one that’s making its mark in a very positive way.  In addition to being a locally-owned business, it supports local suppliers such as Phil & Sebastian for coffee, Papa Chocolat products for their hot chocolates and mochas, Say Cheese Inc. for, well, I don’t think I need to state the obvious, and Pascal’s Patisserie for their amazing French pastries.  Gravity also works with and supports various local charities, so it’s a great community-minded establishment.

What Gravity also has going for them are their various weekly specials and events, like their Saturday open mic nights where entertainers can come and perform.  They’re also open late on most nights (to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays), which I think is rare to see in a café.  It might also be that they’re licensed to serve alcohol, so that’s always a plus for those late nights.

interiorI’ve been to Gravity a few times and I always enjoy their spacious interior.  The first time I visited, I think I described it as a non-pretentious hipster-esque café hangout (or something along those lines).  Even with its tall ceilings and wide-open feel, it still manages to be warm and cosy.  On this visit, however, we took advantage of the nice weather and took a table on their patio, which is mercifully positioned in the shade in the afternoon.  This makes my pasty, slightly-allergic-to-the-sun skin very happy.

treatsI opted for an Iced Chai Latte and their Flourless Chocolate Cake.  Ok, so I know mason jars are overdone these days (if you ever go in Pinterest for wedding ideas, like I was obsessively doing many months ago, mason jars are ALL YOU SEE.  It’s like they brainwash you into thinking I MUST HAVE ALL THE MASON JARS, otherwise my wedding is a complete and utter failure and nobody will think I’m cool and trendy), but I still enjoy getting my drink in a mason jar.  It’s cute!  My chai was sweet and spicy, just the way a chai should be.

chococakeThis flourless chocolate cake was pretty decadent.  It was dense, rich, and super chocolately, like a truffle in cake form (which is how I think flourless chocolate cakes should be).

cheesecakeOne of my friends had the Hot Chocolate and Cheesecake in a Jar.  Obviously this cheesecake is not gluten-friendly, but I couldn’t resist trying some.  Oh my, this stuff is amazing!  I usually think of cheesecakes as very rich and decadent, but this cheesecake was light and fluffy, with just the right amount of sweetness.  I probably need to have this again someday.

Besides being stalked by a wasp in the later part of our afternoon, we had an enjoyable time catching up and hanging out at Gravity.  Not only do they have a wide selection of drinks and eats, but a friendly and relaxed vibe.  I’ll be visiting Gravity more frequently.  Because I need one of those cheesecakes pretty soon.
