This past Labour Day long weekend was spent with The Cheung Crew (as I affectionately refer to my in-law family) in Banff and area. We shared a spacious cabin at beautiful Castle Mountain and took in a ton of nature and general away-from-cityness for 3 1/2 days. Over the course of those days, we chased a starlit sky, a sunrise in temperatures that felt like we were right in the middle of winter, and a sunset that would’ve been better to watch at the aforementioned sunrise location. We also grilled a ton of meat, ate way too much food, and didn’t get nearly enough sleep to function at optimum levels. So, all in all, an excellent family getaway.
On our way back to Calgary, we stopped in Banff to pass some time and grab some grub. First, we ended up at the Banff Springs Hotel (we were originally aiming for The Rimrock, but somehow got lost), where we enjoyed some drinks on their terrace, and then headed back into the Banff town site, where ended up at The Eddie Burger + Bar.
A line-up had already formed outside the tightly packed, small space, but luckily the wait for a table for our party of 6 would only be about 10 minutes. With the relatively small sidewalk/waiting space outside and crowds of tourists milling about, we spread out just off the sidewalks, in between a couple of parked cars, one of which happened to be this wacky VW bug adorned with a giant burger.
True to the original 10-minute table prediction, we were seated within that time frame at a tall table with a long bench along the wall and stools on the other side. As mentioned previously, the place is pretty small, but the interior is modern and funky. Kinda reminded me of Calgary’s Clive Burger in a way.
I think we were all pretty bagged because conversation was barely existent. Instead, we focused our attention to the TV’s and watched tennis highlights from years past while we waited for our order to arrive. It must’ve been because it was really busy, but it felt like it took a long time to get our order.
Even with the myriad of Signature Burgers available, I chose to build my own burger. Since I tend to be picky (like, asking for no cheese, ALWAYS), I figured building one myself would eliminate the headache of substitutions/subtractions. You know how they say, the more choices you have, the harder it is to make a decision? I felt that when I was looking at all the options available for buns, meat patty, sauces, and toppings. I think it’s awesome that they provide so many options, but it can also be really overwhelming. I was most conflicted when choosing my bun. I know… it’s just a bun, right? NOOOOO. The bun is the vessel, the foundation! They did offer a gluten-free bun, but the whole weekend was a wash with food indulgences at that point. I was so torn between the pretzel bun and the ciabatta. Since I rarely ever get to indulge in pretzel buns, I ultimately chose it for my vessel. To round it out, I went with bacon, mixed greens, tomatoes, onion strings, and chipotle mayo.
The verdict on the burger? Pretty good! The bun was soft and held up all of my burger goodies really well, and the beef patty was juicy and flavourful. My only complaint on the burger was that the bacon wasn’t crispy enough and I could’ve used more onion strings, but otherwise it was a pretty decent burger.
I swear I checked off “sweet potato fries” for my side, but I ended up with a large bowl of regular fries. I really had a hankering for sweet potato fries, so we asked them bring them out. I just wanted a regular order, but ended up with the large bowl. Oh well, I still ate it all.
The burger was good enough that I’d like to go back and give it another try. I’d probably go with one of their already-built Signature burgers (to lessen the overwhelming decision-making process of building my own), and the sweet potato fries were definitely to my liking. Although the wait for our food was a bit long, we had good service and the vibe was casual and friendly. Not one of the top burgers I’ve had, but certainly a solid one.
